The Michigan chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the decision by the Rockford Board of Education to censure one of its trustees following an offensive email questioning a school district employee about alleged ties to the “Muslim Brotherhood.”
The formal censure came after board members reviewed communications sent by the trustee, which used anti-Muslim tropes and questioned the employee’s background based on religious and racial stereotypes. School board leadership reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining an inclusive environment free from bias and anti-Muslim bigotry.
In a statement, CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid said:
“We welcome the Rockford Board of Education’s decisive action to censure this trustee. Public school board officials are entrusted with serving all students, families, and staff regardless of their faith or ethnicity. Questioning a staff member’s loyalty or background using anti-Muslim conspiracy theories is entirely unacceptable. This vote sends a clear message that Islamophobia and bigoted harassment will not be tolerated in our public educational institutions.”
CAIR-MI urges public officials and educational leaders across Illinois to foster respectful, inclusive environments and offers anti-Islamophobia and diversity training programs for school boards and educators.
