CAIR-MI Welcomes Recognition of Its Client, Marna Muhammad, as Qualified Clergy by Michigan Department of Corrections

(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 6/18/2018) — The Michigan chapter of Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed Michigan Department of Corrections’ (MDOC) recognition of Marna Muhammad as qualified clergy.

“We are pleased with MDOC’s decision to finally do the right thing and recognize Ms. Muhammad as qualified clergy so that she can immediately begin addressing the needs of women housed in MDOC facilities,” said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Amy Doukoure.

In April of this year, CAIR-MI filed a Michigan Department of Civil Rights complaint against the MDOC on behalf of Ms. Muhammad when MDOC refused to acknowledge her as qualified clergy for the purpose of visiting and administering to the religious needs of inmates housed at the state’s only women’s correctional facility.

At that time, women housed at the MDOC facility were requesting clergy services to address their immediate religious needs, and specifically requested visitation by a female clergy member. CAIR-MI attempted to assist Ms. Muhammad in obtaining status as qualified clergy, going through several avenues with MDOC, prior to filing the discrimination complaint in April.

CAIR-MI was just notified by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, that in response to the complaint filed by CAIR-MI on behalf of Ms. Muhammad, the MDOC would grant Ms. Muhammad status as qualified clergy and that she could begin visiting MDOC facilities immediately.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
