CAIR-MI Welcomes Vote to Censure Plainfield Township Board Trustee Over Anti-Muslim Post, Calls for Resignation

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the Plainfield Charter Township Board of Trustees’ vote to censure Trustee Robert Reminga and request his resignation following controversy over an alleged anti-Muslim social media post.

The post, which Reminga has denied making, depicted what was described as a “hunting permit” for “all species, types” of Muslims. The township board held a special meeting Friday to address community concerns and voted to censure Reminga and request that he resign from the board. Reminga has said he will not resign.

“Public officials have a responsibility to serve all members of their communities and to reject bigotry, religious hatred and dehumanizing rhetoric in all forms,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “We welcome the Plainfield Township Board’s decision to formally censure Trustee Reminga and call for his resignation. Elected officials must understand that anti-Muslim rhetoric has real consequences for Muslims who deserve to feel safe, respected and represented by their local government. He should apologize and resign.”

Last month, CAIR-MI condemned an anti-Arab racist outburst by Farmington Hills School Board Trustee Angie Smith targeting Dr. Abdul El Sayed.
