CAIR-Michigan Files Department of Civil Rights Complaint on Behalf of Detroit Worker

(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 10/11/17) — The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today filed a formal complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights on behalf of a Michigan Muslim who asserts being subjected to discrimination in the workplace.

The individual, who worked as a mechanic for Metro Cars, reports having faced discriminatory actions and racist remarks in the workplace. The actions include being subjected to selective disciplinary action and termination by co-workers and a supervisor who openly made bigoted, Islamophobic and racist remarks on the shop floor.

“At no time should individuals have to work in an environment of racism and bigotry, nor should they fear termination solely on the basis of their religion,” said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Amy Doukoure.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
