(ST. LOUIS, MO, 5/6/2022) – The Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Missouri) today welcomed federal hate crime charges for a man accused of burning down a Mormon church last year.
Yesterday, the Justice Department announced hate crime charges against the man in connection with his alleged role in an arson fire at a Mormon church in Cape Girardeau, Mo., last April. If convicted, the man faces up to 20 years in prison consecutive to any other sentence.

“We welcome the hate crime charges in this despicable attack targeting a house of worship,” said CAIR-Missouri Board Chair Yasir Ali. “We stand in solidarity with the Mormon community and all those targeted by bigotry and hate.”
He noted that earlier this week, CAIR-Connecticut condemned an allegedly bias-motivated arson of a vehicle belonging to a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
