(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 10/7/20) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Minnesota) today calls for Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to investigate disinformation, voter suppression, and voter intimidation campaigns targeting Minnesota.
Recently a propaganda group notorious for misleading “sting operations” falsely claimed that certain members of the Minnesota Somali-American community are engaging in election improprieties. This propaganda group released videos that use heavy editing to make unsubstantiated claims and misrepresent the legal ballot collection process.
CAIR-Minnesota calls for Minnesota Attorney General Ellison to investigate disinformation campaigns. According to recent media reports, “the male subject of the disinformation campaign story was offered a bribe.” This type of disinformation enables Islamophobic behavior and further marginalizes the Muslim population the media has hurt in the past.
“Coordinated disinformation campaigns are harming the Somali-American community and are pushing islamophobic narratives that aim to intimidate and suppress the Somali-American vote. We need to start holding peddlers of disinformation accountable,” said Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director of CAIR-Minnesota.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
