ABOUT “JOY IS STILL ALLOWED”
“Joy Is Still Allowed” is a comedy and community experience created by Preacher Moss, pioneering Muslim comedian, educator and founder of Allah Made Me Funny. The program uses laughter as a doorway into conversations about race, faith, identity, belonging and the responsibility communities have to build meaningful connections with one another.
More than a night of comedy, “Joy Is Still Allowed” is a CAIR National community initiative built around a simple idea: the arts can create spaces where people laugh together, talk honestly and rediscover what they share.
The event will use comedy, storytelling and community engagement to confront issues including racial injustice, Islamophobia, cultural division and the social barriers that too often separate communities from one another.
CAIR National’s work in civil rights, advocacy and community engagement serves Muslim communities while contributing to the broader pursuit of fairness, dignity and opportunity for people of different faiths, races and backgrounds. “Joy Is Still Allowed” extends that work into the cultural space—using art not simply as entertainment, but as a way to build relationships.
For Moss, bringing this conversation to Oklahoma represents a continuation of work that began decades ago. His investment in Oklahoma diversity initiatives dates back to the 1990s, when he toured the state with his “End of Racism” comedy and lecture program, using humor and education to create conversations across racial and cultural lines.
“Tulsa represents the promise of shared communal purpose and identity at a time when those things are sorely lacking,” Moss said. “We need spaces where Muslim and non-Muslim, Black and white, young and old can sit in the same room, laugh together and remember that community is something we build. We may not agree on everything, but we can start by seeing each other.”
Tulsa’s history makes that message especially meaningful. The city has experienced both the devastating consequences of racial division and the extraordinary power of community resilience. “Joy Is Still Allowed” looks toward that history while asking what communities can build together today.
The evening is intended for Muslim and non-Muslim audiences alike. The goal is not simply to leave people laughing, but to leave them more connected, encouraged and hopeful about what can happen when communities create space for one another.
