(NEW YORK, NY, 2/18/2022) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-New York) today welcomed hate crime charges against a man suspected of assaulting an Asian-American woman in Brooklyn.
A Brooklyn man was arraigned yesterday on charges including attempted assault as a hate crime and menacing as a hate crime for allegedly punching an Asian-American woman in the face three times in a Jan. 19 attack. The man reportedly told police that “Chinese people are not supposed to be in this country” and that they “look like the measles.”

“We welcome hate crime charges in this disturbing case,” said CAIR-New York Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “As violent, hate-motivated attacks targeting Asian-Americans continue to rise nationwide, it is essential that law enforcement take each case seriously and pursue appropriate charges for perpetrators.”
She noted that earlier this week, CAIR urged officials in Washington, D.C., to address the spike in anti-Asian incidents in that city.

Earlier this month, CAIR expressed solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community following the release of a new report indicating that anti-Asian hate crimes spiked 339 percent in 2021. [Note: Many Muslims are also members of the AAPI community.]
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
