CAIR-NY: 1,000+ Letters Sent to Senators on Gaza Blockade

(NEW YORK, N.Y., 2/26/08) – The New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) said today it has collected and sent to Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Charles Schumer (R-NY) a total of 1,132 letters calling for an end to Israel’s “collective punishment” of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
CAIR recently called on prayer leaders (imams) in mosques nationwide to devote part of their Friday sermons (khutbas) to the plight of Palestinians denied basic services by Israel’s blockade of Gaza.
“CAIR’s letter-writing campaign is a grassroots initiative designed to highlight the community’s dismay at congressional inaction in the face of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” said CAIR-NY Community Affairs Director Faiza N. Ali.
Ali added that anyone interested in taking part in the letter-writing campaign may contact the nearest CAIR chapter.
CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 35 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
