(NEW YORK, NY 6/7/17) – On Saturday, June 10, the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) and the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) will partner with leading civil rights groups and grassroots activists to rally in support of the Muslim community, showcasing a pluralistic alternative to alt-right activists who are holding a “March Against Sharia” in Foley Square. Rather than responding to Act For America’s hateful rhetoric, organizers hope to put forth a separate and wholly positive and pluralistic message.
“Our strength as a city and as a nation lies in our ability to love our neighbors and respect our diversity,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director, Afaf Nasher. “The bigoted fear-mongering some choose to espouse will only make our unity stronger.”
“We come together to prove that the opposite of hate is not mere tolerance, it’s love,” said CAIR-NY Legal Director, Albert Cahn. “Participants will show our City’s unshakable commitment to pluralism. When our neighbors are under attack, we will never silently stand by.”
“The moral spirit of our nation has always been anchored by love of community, diversity and inclusion, ” said New York City Loves Muslims founder, Mohammed Naeem. “In many small strokes, it is this love that eventually fills the canvas of our democracy. On Saturday, we will demonstrate our love for the Muslim community here and across the nation, declaring that our city is a home and sanctuary for all.”
