(NEW YORK, NY, 10/7/2022) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed hate crime charges for the alleged perpetrator of an assault targeting a Muslim woman at a subway station.
Brooklyn resident Joval Cedeno, 41, was arraigned Wednesday before a court in Queens on a five-count indictment charging him with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment.
The charges are in connection with an incident that occurred in February, in which Cedeno allegedly pursued and attacked a Muslim woman inside an N train near the Queensboro Plaza subway station. Cedeno reportedly made a reference to the woman’s Islamic religious attire before attacking her. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“This appalling attack on a Muslim woman for practicing her faith must be addressed appropriately by law enforcement. We welcome the hate crime charges against the suspected perpetrator of this despicable crime and urge law enforcement authorities in New York and nationwide to crack down on bias-motivated crimes targeting communities of faith.”
She noted that CAIR-NY previously welcomed the arrest of Joval Cedeno.
