CAIR-Ohio Holds Week of Advocacy and Legal Training for Summer Interns

(COLUMBUS, OHIO 6/23/2022) – Over the past week, interns participating in the Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) Summer Internship Development Program received advocacy and legal training.

Interns received an overview of CAIR-Ohio’s legal services and participated in a simulated employment discrimination hearing, in which they drafted and presented oral arguments. CAIR National Board Chair Roula Allouch, who is also a local trial attorney, visited CAIR-Ohio’s Cincinnati office to discuss her background, passions and what led her to legal and civil rights work.

The interns and staff also visited Cincinnati City Hall to meet with Mayor Aftab Pureval to learn about the function of the mayor’s office and the significance of being the first Asian mayor of a major Midwestern city. While there, interns toured City Hall and participated in a simulated city council meeting.

This followed a week focused on legislative advocacy, with trainings, lobbying at National Muslim Advocacy Day, and a visit by Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo to CAIR-Ohio’s Columbus office. Leader Russo spoke to interns about her day-to-day life as a state representative, as well as the importance of legislation at the state level.
