CAIR Opposes Virginia School Board’s ‘Unnecessary and Harmful’ Resolution Banning Anti-Racism Teaching

(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/27/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed opposition to a resolution banning anti-racism teaching in a Virginia county.

On Monday, Campbell County’s school board passed a resolution purporting to ban “critical race theory” in K-12 curriculums. The resolution generated controversy, with Campbell County’s NAACP chapter expressing opposition to its passage.

According to the American Bar Association, “CRT recognizes that racism is not a bygone relic of the past. Instead, it acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation.”

“This unnecessary and harmful resolution will only serve to undermine teachers and obstruct students’ ability to learn about American history, including systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy, which continue to impact minority communities in Virginia and nationwide,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He noted that school officials say CRT is not being taught in K-12 schools in any part of the country and that CAIR has previously condemned attempts to ban teaching about racism nationwide.
