CAIR-Oregon joined a coalition of groups including Unite-Oregon, the ACLU of Oregon and Portland Copwatch in advocating for Portland to withdraw from the JTTF.

In a statement, CAIR-Oregon Spokesperson Zakir Khan said:

“We are grateful that the Portland City Council pledged to stand up for the rights of the Muslim community through withdrawing from the JTTF. This decision affirms the voices of traumatized Muslims all across the country who have spoken out and advocated against undue harassment by JTTF officers. We hope this action will spur other cities to reevaluate their involvement in the JTTF.”

CAIR-Oregon was assisted by CAIR-San Francisco Bay Area’s Executive Director Zahra Billoo.

In a statement Billoo said:

“Our experience in San Francisco and Oakland has shown us that participation in the JTTF is proving incompatible with local laws and that where asked to comply and be transparent, the FBI has put up road block after road block hamstringing police departments. Congratulations to Portland on once again demonstrating real leadership and prioritizing civil rights.”

Last week, CAIR-Oregon joined by the Oregon Justice Resource Center and Western States Center successfully advocated for a resolution by the Portland City Council to condemn white supremacy and white nationalism.
