(BALTIMORE, MD, 7/2/19) – Later today, the  Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), will join Catonsville Indivisible and Indivisible Central Maryland at a rally in Catonsville, Md., outside Congressman Elijah Cummings’ office to call on Congress to close the camps in which migrant children are being detained and to use federal funding to reunite immigrant families.

WHO: Catonsville Indivisible, Indivisible Central Maryland, CAIR and Others

WHAT: Catonsville Rally to Demand Congress #ClosetheCamps

WHEN: Tuesday, July 2, 12 p.m.

WHERE: Outside Rep. Elijah Cummings’ Catonsville Office, 754 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD 21228

Eyewitness accounts this week revealed that children in the camps have been denied soap and toothbrushes, crowded into unsafe conditions, separated from their families, and subjected to harsh treatment that can lead to trauma.

Last week, images of a father and daughter drowning in the Rio Grande brought close to home the extent and severity of the crisis.

“The images and stories emerging from detention camps along our Southern border are gut-wrenching and horrific,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “Threatening raids, terrorizing communities, tearing families apart, and locking children in cages under such inhumane conditions isn’t about border security. These atrocious acts by CBP and ICE officials are a direct consequence of the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda. We urge all people of conscience to join us to call on congress to act now to end this cruel mistreatment.”

On Tuesday, while members of Congress are home for the Fourth of July holiday, people of conscience will gather at their local offices to demand they:

  • Close the camps
  • Use federal funding to reunite families rather than on family detention or deportation
  • Bear witness and reunite families

Last week, CAIR condemned reports of ICE arrests in Howard County and released a community advisory ahead of anticipated raids on families in several major cities across the country. At least eight or nine people were reportedly taken into custody.
