(BALTIMORE, MD, 2/26/19) – Yesterday evening, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Prince George’s County Muslim Council (PGCMC) held the first statewide Muslim lobby day at the Maryland state capital of Annapolis.
Building off the success of PGCMC’s first lobby event last year with that county’s elected representatives, the delegation visited more than 30 state lawmakers’ offices representing at least six counties. Muslim lobby event participants brought legislative packets containing information on eight bills being considered in the Maryland General Assembly that pertain to issues ranging from immigration, hate crimes, a statewide commission on lynching, and alternate forms of investment.
CAIR also flagged issues of interest, including Governor Hogan’s unconstitutional anti-BDS executive order, faith-based bullying of Muslim children in public schools, reasonable living wages and ending support for genocides around the world.
”PGCMC appreciates it partnership with CAIR on the Maryland statewide lobbying day,” said Prince George’s County Muslim Council President Jameel Johnson. “The Muslim community is slowly beginning to understand its ability to influence policy for the betterment of not only our community but all of Maryland.”
“Every day during the session, legislators debate and vote on bills that impact all Marylanders, including Muslims,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “This effort marks progress in moving the work forward to encourage more engaged dialogue between state lawmakers and their Muslim constituents.”
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
The Prince George’s County Muslim Council is a non-profit grass roots organization whose mission is to promote the involvement of Muslim residents in the civic and political affairs of the county.
