(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/3/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today once again called on the State Department to designate India a country of particular concern after rampaging far-right Hindutva nationalist mobs murdered an imam, burned down mosques, and destroyed Muslim-owned businesses in a suburb of New Delhi.
The Anjuman Jama mosque in Gurugram, a suburb of New Delhi, came under attack on the night of July 31, in addition to Muslim owned businesses. During the violence, the mosque’s deputy imam was reportedly killed by the Hindu nationalists. The attacks came after communal violence the previous day in the neighboring Nuh district.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“As so many of us predicted, India’s far-right Hindutva government has inspired and allowed mobs to massacre Indian Muslims and target other religious minorities. These attacks will likely escalate if world powers continue to validate Narendra Modi the way the White House did just weeks before these massacres.
“President Biden should condemn these anti-Muslim pogroms, the State Department should designate India as a country of particular concern, and the nations of the world should hold Narendra Modi accountable before he unleashes an outright genocide upon the religious minorities of India.”
Mitchell noted that CAIR has previously called for the State Department to designate India a country of particular concern.
He noted that in May, CAIR called on the White House not to honor India’s far-right Hindutva Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a state dinner and a joint session of Congress.
