(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/67/06) – A representative of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) yesterday attended a dedication ceremony for the first Islamic Prayer Center on a U.S. Marine Corps base.
Speakers at the event in Quantico, Va., included Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England and General Michael Hagee, commandant of the Marine Corps. Islamic Chaplain Abuhena Saifulislam, a navy lieutenant, began the event by reciting from the Quran.
Among those in attendance was an American Muslim who served in the Normandy landings during World War II and American Muslim veterans of the wars in Korea and Vietnam.
