The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today responded to the death of convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladic, who died at age 84 while serving a life sentence in The Hague.
Mladic was convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in 2017 for his role in atrocities committed during the Bosnian War, including the Srebrenica genocide and the siege of Sarajevo. He had been in custody since his 2011 arrest after years as a fugitive.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“We commend the Bosnian people and the international justice system for their efforts to ensure that war criminal Ratko Mladic faced accountability in a court of law for his genocidal crimes and spent the remainder of his life in prison.
“In the wake of Mladic’s death, we remember, mourn and pray for the thousands of Bosnian Muslim men, women and children he and the Serbian army slaughtered during the Bosnian genocide.
“War criminal Ratko Mladic’s death should also remind every nation of the need to hold today’s war criminals accountable and end the scourge of genocide, whether in Gaza, Sudan, Burma or elsewhere.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
