CAIR-Sacramento Valley Condemns Racist Attack on Folsom Student

(SACRAMENTO, CA, 12/04/18) – The Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV) today condemned a racially-motivated attack against a Folsom Middle School student that sent the victim to the UC Davis Trauma Center with a brain injury

A schoolmate allegedly hurled racial slurs at Titus White, 12, and then pushed White into a metal pole during a field trip to Sacramento State on Nov. 2.

White suffered bleeding in his brain and spent three days in a hospital.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) says the attack is a hate crime. White is African American and the attacker is white.

In a statement, CAIR-SV’s Executive Director Basim Elkarra said:
“We condemn this horrendous attack on a young student. It is disturbing that a middle school student would be assaulted due to his ethnicity or appearance. It is equally disturbing that someone so young has already been indoctrinated with such hateful ideology. We must stand up and protect each other in this era of emboldened bigots.

“We call for the district to discipline the bully and move him to a different school so Titus White can continue attending classes without concern for his safety. We also call for the district to re-evaluate its approach to handling and preventing cases of bullying.”

On Monday, Dec. 4, CAIR-SV attended and spoke at a press briefing led by the Sacramento NAACP that aimed to “shine a light on the continuing issue of bullying and systemic racism in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District,” with an emphasis on the White case.

“CAIR’s most recent Civil Rights Report found that over 50 percent of Muslim students have been subjected to school bullying,” said CAIR-SV Policy & Advocacy Coordinator Mahmoud Zahriya at the Monday briefing. “This often results in Muslim children hiding their religious identity.

“We hear this all too often: cases of students who are sadly hiding their identity due to bullying. But Titus White can’t hide his racial identity – and he shouldn’t. He should always feel safe!”

CAIR California (CAIR-CA) found that there was a marked rise in anti-Muslim bias incidents in California in 2017, as detailed in its Civil Rights Report. CAIR-CA recorded an 8 percent increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents in 2017 compared to 2016.
Elkarra urged community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR-SV’s Civil Rights Department at 916-441-6269 or by filing a report at
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
