(SAN DIEGO, CA, 12/24/14) — The San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-San Diego) today called for an inquiry into a local flight school’s use of a manual containing Islamophobic and sexist illustrations to train pilots.
CAIR-San Diego called for that inquiry after receiving reports of inappropriate images in the manual, “Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot,†which is used at California Flight Academy.Â
The manual depicts a scantily clad flight attendant saying “Coffee, tea, or. . .?†in apparent imitation of the outdated advertising phase “coffee, tea or me.†It also shows a person with his faced covered by a keffiyeh (a traditional Middle Eastern headdress) holding what appears to be a Quran (Islam’s revealed text) and a knife stating “Allah is great. . .Life sucks!†in a section of the manual on “prohibition against carriage of weapons.â€

“We are shocked that the editor, the teachers and the academy administrators have allowed this kind of inappropriate and unprofessional material to go unchallenged,â€Â said CAIR-San Diego Executive Director Hanif Mohebi. Â
Mohebi said American Muslims have long been concerned about religious and ethnic profiling at airports by security and airline personnel.

In a letter sent to the academy and copied to the Federal Aviation Administration, CAIR Civil Rights Litigation Director Jenifer Wicks wrote in part:
“Professional training should not include the use of religious and gender stereotypes. The use of this unprofessional training material can only serve to create a hostile learning environment for your students and to promote a bigoted and stereotypical view of women and of Islam. We urge you to take all appropriate measures to correct this situation and to ensure that textbooks and materials used in your training are free of sexism and anti-Muslim bias.â€
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
