The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Congress to immediately end U.S. funding and military support for the Israeli government following new reports that Israeli soldiers are looting civilian property in occupied towns in Lebanon.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Israeli soldiers testified that looting occurred during military operations in southern Lebanon and that commanding officers were aware of the misconduct and took no meaningful action to stop it.
In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:
“The looting by Israeli soldiers of occupied Lebanese towns underscores a broader pattern of impunity in committing war crimes that must not be subsidized by American taxpayers. Pillaging civilian property is a violation of international law and is a moral outrage.
“Congress must act now to halt all military aid to the Israeli government. Continued U.S. support in the face of Israel’s crimes against humanity risks making our nation complicit in those violations.
“The American people do not want their tax dollars used to enable the destruction of civilian communities, whether in Gaza, the illegally-occupied West Bank, or Lebanon. Lawmakers must choose accountability, justice, and human dignity over unconditional support for genocide and war crimes.”
Yesterday, CAIR condemned the murder of a 14-year-old Palestinian boy by illegal Israeli settlers in an attack on a school in the West Bank.
CAIR also condemned an attack on a mosque in south Lebanon by Israeli forces and a reported Israeli strike on rescue workers attempting to assist a wounded journalist in Lebanon.
This week, CAIR called on the Trump administration and Congress to stop ignoring and enabling Israel’s longstanding “war on Christians” after Israeli occupation forces were shown smashing a statue depicting Jesus in Lebanon.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
