CAIR Seeks Reinstatement of Va. Muslim Woman Fired Over Hijab

CAIR logo(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/3/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on a Virginia dental office to re-hire and compensate a Muslim woman who was allegedly fired because she wears an Islamic head scarf, or hijab.

Earlier this week, the Muslim woman of South Asian heritage was reportedly fired from Fair Oaks Dental Care in Fairfax, Va., after going to work wearing her hijab, which she had recently adopted for religious reasons. She was allegedly asked why she was wearing the scarf and informed her supervisor that it was because of her faith.

[NOTE: Even though the Muslim employee had only been working at Fair Oaks Dental Care for a short time, she had already received positive feedback about her job performance.]

According to the Muslim employee, she was told that the company wanted to keep religion out of the office and that the hijab would “offend†patients. The supervisor reportedly said the Muslim employee would have to take off her head scarf in order to keep her job.

When the Muslim employee informed the supervisor that she would not violate her religious principles by removing her hijab, she was literally shown the door.

“No employee should face termination because of his or her faith or religious practices,†said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We call on Fair Oaks Dental Care to reinstate the Muslim employee and to offer her reasonable religious accommodation as mandated by law.â€

Hooper said the Muslim woman should also be compensated for the economic and emotional loss suffered as a result of her firing.

CAIR offers a booklet, called “An Employer's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” to help employers gain a better understanding of Islam and Muslims in the workplace.
