CAIR-SFBA: 1,000 Turn Out for San Jose Unity Rally, Show Strength and Diversity as Alternative to Anti-Islam Event

CAIR SFBA 1000 Turn Out for San Jose Unity Rally Show Strength and Diversity as Alternative to Anti Islam Event(SANTA CLARA, CA, 6/10/17) – The San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA), Meet a Muslim, People Acting in Community Together, and Multifaith Voices for Peace & Justice today convened a Unity Rally hosted by 131 diverse organizations. Together they brought 1,000 attendees to rally in support of the Muslim community, showcasing a pluralistic alternative to the white supremacist and Islamophobic  “March Against Sharia” in Santa Clara.

“We were inspired to see hundreds of people ,including clergy and elected officials from all faith backgrounds, join this afternoon’s Unity Rally,” said CAIR-SFBA Executive Director Zahra Billoo. “That our event outnumbered the anti-Muslim protestors more than twenty-to-one sends a strong message about the Silicon Valley and this region’s rejection of hate.”

“People are hungry to come together and speak a word of love and unity. We did that today and it was beautiful,” said Multifaith Voices for Peace & Justice Convener Rev. Diana Gibson. “We stand with our Muslims friends and neighbors. The fibers of our community are strong.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
