CAIR-SFBA Welcomes Hate Crime Investigations of Racist Graffiti in Vallejo and Union City

(SANTA CLARA, CA, 6/25/2020) – The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) today welcomed hate crime investigations of racist graffiti found at Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo on Wednesday morning and a similar incident discovered in Union City.

“White power” with a picture of a swastika and “N**** we’re coming to kill you” was painted outside the park restrooms in Vallejo.

A 65-year-old man on his daily walk noticed what was written and told a park employee. Though graffiti was painted over soon after it was discovered, the pictures posted on social media spread and residents of Vallejo came by to drop off messages of love and support.

On Sunday in Union City, a car with Black Lives Matter signs parked in a residential area was spray-painted with obscene language similar to what happened in Vallejo. The front windshield was also smashed. Police responded to the incident and investigated it as a hate crime.

Zahra Billoo, Executive Director of CAIR-SFBA said in a statement:

“We welcome the hate crime investigations of these horrible incidents happening across the Bay Area in recent weeks. It is heartbreaking to see such overt racism targeting people and property in the cities that we live in. These actions are unacceptable and we urge anyone who experiences something similar to report it and speak out.”

CAIR-SFBA has responded to a number of recent hate incidences in the Bay Area and urges community members to take necessary safety precautions and allies to continue to speak out against hate.
