CAIR-SFBA Welcomes Hate Crime Probe of Anti-Asian Vandalism Targeting San Leandro Home

(SANTA CLARA, CA, 6/20/2022) – The San Francisco Bay Area Office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA), today welcomed a hate crime investigation concerning anti-Asian slurs spray-painted onto a San Leandro, Calif., home over the weekend.

Police responded to the first report of vandalism at 9 p.m. on Saturday, in which “a racial epithet within an anti-Asian message” was scrawled on a realtor sign marketing the property for sale. On Sunday, police arrived at 7 a.m. to find the same epithet painted on the home’s garage door.

The vandalism is being investigated as a hate crime because the realtor, property owner and recent tenants of the house are all of Asian descent.

“There is no room for any act of racist hate in our community and we welcome the hate crime investigation by law enforcement authorities,” said Sameena Usman, senior government relations coordinator for CAIR-SFBA. “We fully support our Asian community members and will work with all minority communities to ensure safe and inclusive neighborhoods.”

Anyone with information regarding the vandalism is urged to contact SLPD via any of the following methods: non-emergency line at 510-577-2740, anonymous tip line at 510-577-3278, or text-to-tip at 888777 (keyword: TipSLPolice).
