(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/1/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today submitted a written statement for the record for today’s U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties hearing on “Discrimination and the Civil Rights of the Muslim, Arab, and South Asian American Communities.”

CAIR notes that American Muslims U.S. Representatives Andre Carson (D-IN) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) will be among those testifying on behalf of the American Muslim community. Congresswomen Judy Chu (D-CA) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) will also be providing testimony from their perspectives as Asian and South Asian American lawmakers.
In its statement, CAIR thanked the committee for hosting today’s hearing and urged the committee to commit itself to:
- Repairing the damage done by the Muslim ban, including providing redress for the 41,000 visa applicants from the banned countries were denied as a result of the prior administration’s travel bans.
- Investigating the funding sources of anti-Muslim hate groups promoting Islamophobia
- Supporting calls for the DOJ to investigate the anti-Muslim hate group Investigative Project on Terrorism, which has been accused of spying on American Muslim community organizations, and elected Muslim officials.
- Reforming the unconstitutional, discriminatory, and ineffective Federal Terrorism Watchlist.
In his written statement, CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw said:
“We believe that today’s hearing represents another opportunity for this committee, Congress, and the federal government to recommit itself to protecting the civil rights of all Americans, including American Muslim, Arab American, and South Asian American communities.
“We will continue to encourage committee members to advance the concerns that were raised in today’s hearing by American Muslim, Arab American, and South Asian American community organizations and elected Muslim officials like Congressman Andre Carson and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.
“Anti-Muslim, Anti-Arab, and Anti-South Asian discrimination can be overcome by unity and by upholding the civil rights of all Americans.”
