(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/1/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today released a preview of data regarding American Muslim views on gun safety reform in advance of the full release of a survey from its poll, “American Muslims and the 2022 Midterm Elections.”
The survey, which polled 525 American Muslims from across the country between May 25 and June 23, 2022 regarding various policy issues, is scheduled for full release on Wednesday, July 6.
CAIR’s midterm election survey asked the policy question: “Which of the following statements best represents your views on the federal regulation of regulating semi-automatic rifles?”
The majority of Muslim respondents (82.3%, 432) “support a federal ban on semi-automatic rifles such as AR-15” while a minority (11.8%, 62) report opposing such a ban.
By gender, 92.1% of Muslim women respondents (139) “support a federal ban on semi-automatic rifles such as AR-15” while 79.2% of Muslim male respondents support such a ban. Conversely, 14.7% (52) Muslim male respondents report opposing such a ban.
In a 2018 survey of over 1,250 Muslim voter households, CAIR found overwhelming support (93%) for requiring background checks for all gun sales and for other increased safety reforms to gun laws.
In 2019, Religion News Service published similar findings in a separate poll of viewpoints on gun safety reform.
On June 2, CAIR urged all Americans to contact their members of Congress to support the adoption of the gun safety reform measure, “Protecting Our Kids Act,” H.R. 7910. The bill was adopted by the House, but the Senate adopted, and Congress later passed a more limited reform bill.
Yesterday, CAIR released the first batch of data from its midterm election survey of American Muslims previewing American Muslim views on abortion law after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
