CAIR Urges Indiana Real Estate Official to Meet Muslim Community Leaders After Islamophobic Post

(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/21/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged a real estate official in Indiana who promoted a false and Islamophobic post on Facebook to meet with Muslim community leaders in that state.

Glenda Gasparine, president and CEO of the Southern Indiana Realtors Association (SIRA) made a post on her personal Facebook account that was copied and pasted from another user falsely stating that imams, or Islamic religious leaders, believe that Muslims must kill people of other faiths “so they can have a place in heaven.” The post has been deleted from Gasaprine’s page.

“Everyone – black, brown or white, and no matter their faith or background – deserves equal treatment when attempting to find a home. Gasparine’s choice to share bigot material with her followers certainly leaves a fair doubt as to her ability to provide that equal treatment,” said CAIR Director of Research and Advocacy Corey Saylor. “She should immediately meet with local Muslim leaders to learn facts about our faith or resign her position.”

He cited a verse in the Quran, Islam’s revealed text, in which God states: “Rest assured that (Muslims), Jews, Christians, and Sabians – whoever believes in God and the last day and perform good deeds – will be rewarded by their Lord; they will have nothing to fear or to regret.” The Holy Quran, 2:62

Earlier today, CAIR welcomed Google’s removal of a stereotypical suggested phrase for the translation of an Arabic word. When the Arabic word for “plan” was entered into Google Translate, “Planning to blow up the car” was offered as a phrase for suggested usage.

He referenced CAIR’s latest civil rights report, which illustrates the impacts of structural and interpersonal Islamophobia in the United States.
