CAIR-NJ Condemns Bias Attack at Paterson Mosque, Welcomes Prosecutor’s Charges

The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today condemned an alleged assault on a Paterson mosque muezzin (the one who calls the prayer) by a Paterson resident. CAIR-New Jersey also welcomed the Passaic County Prosecutor’s charges against the alleged attacker…

In a statement, CAIR-NJ Executive Director Selaedin Maksut said:

“This incident is concerning for the local Muslim community that frequents the mosque. Having a stranger enter the mosque with the alleged intention to inflict physical harm is unsettling at the very least. The Islamophobia and racism against Muslims that continues to negatively impact our nation will not deter American Muslims from practicing their faith. We are an unapologetic community that will not be intimidated.

“The incident is an assault on our freedoms and rights as Americans before it is an assault on our faith community. New Jersey law allows for all houses of worship, regardless of faith, to publicly issue their call to prayer.

“Be it a church bell, the Muslim adhan, or other religious sounds, all houses of worship and New Jerseyans are granted equal opportunity in this regard, and to practice their faith freely under the law. No racist attacker will take this away from us.”

CAIR Calls Milwaukee’s Firing of Anti-Muslim Extremist ‘Welcome, But Long Overdue’

Milwaukee Assistant City Attorney Jennifer DeMaster was dismissed from her position on Monday following an appearance on Russia Today TV during which she argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin was justified in invading Ukraine. The termination notice to the city’s Department of Employee Relations cited only ‘job performance’ and being a ‘poor fit’ as reasons for DeMaster’s dismissal…

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“The City of Milwaukee’s decision to fire Ms. DeMaster is welcome, but long overdue. Given Ms. DeMaster’s past support for efforts to enshrine anti-Muslim bigotry into law, the city should have investigated whether she could fairly uphold the law for all Milwaukee residents. The city’s failure to do so sent a message that the constitutional rights of American Muslims were not important to city officials.”

CAIR Condemns Racist, Anti-Asian Harassment of Nevada Governor, First Lady

A video on social media shows Governor Sisolak and First Lady Kathy Sisolak being harassed by at least two men at a Las Vegas restaurant. In a statement Sisolak characterized the incident as “racist threats.”

In the video, a man goes on a profanity-laced rant, verbally attacking the governor. Another man joins in as they follow the governor, his wife and his daughter. Sisolak’s press aide said the governor was “deeply disappointed in how this incident unfolded, particularly with the language used to talk about First Lady Kathy Sisolak’s heritage.” His wife is of Chinese heritage.

“Americans of all backgrounds and political persuasions must speak out against the disturbing rise in anti-Asian hate and against the growing bigotry we see targeting all minority communities nationwide,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

CAIR Welcomes House Passage of Anti-Lynching Bill, Calls for Approval in Senate

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passage of the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act of 2022 by the House of Representatives. CAIR also called on senators to approve the bill.

Lawmakers approved the bill in a 422-3 vote on Monday. Named for Emmett Till, a Black teen whose 1955 murder propelled the Civil Rights Movement, the bill states that a crime in which conspiracy to commit a hate crime results in death or serious bodily injury can prosecuted as a lynching. The bill initially passed the House in 2020 but was blocked from consideration by the Senate by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky).

“We welcome the passage of this historic act as another step toward ending the legacy of white supremacy and systemic anti-Black racism,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We urge senators to approve this bill, which sends the message that violence motivated by hate and racism will not be tolerated in our nation.”
