(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/12/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Vermont’s political and religious leaders to repudiate racist and anti-Muslim messages left at a Democratic Party office in that state.
An envelope containing images supporting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and attacking Jews, Muslims and Mexicans was slid under the door of the Vermont Democratic Party campaign field office in Bennington, Vt.
“These hate messages are the inevitable result of the toxic rhetoric used in the presidential campaign and should be repudiated by all responsible political and religious leaders,†said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He said CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide since Donald Trump began using Islamophobic rhetoric, including his call for a complete ban on Muslims entering the United States, his rhetorical attack on a Muslim “Gold Star†family, his false claim that “Islam hates us,†his refusal to rule out special IDs for American Muslims, and his willingness to consider closing down American mosques.
Tomorrow, CAIR will hold a news conference at its Capitol Hill headquarters in Washington, D.C., to release the results of a nationwide survey of Muslim voters on the upcoming presidential election and on issues of concern to the Muslim community.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
Muslim community members are urged to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/civil-rights/report-an-incident/view/form.html  Â
