(WASHINGTON D.C., 12/30/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged a South Dakota museum to consult with Lakota tribal leaders about displaying items looted from Lakota people killed in the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.
Items belonging to Lakota people killed by U.S. forces at the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 are on display at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, S.D. The items include a ‘ghost shirt’ taken by a U.S. soldier from one of those killed.

“The Wounded Knee Massacre and the wider genocide of Indigenous people continue to be dark stains on our nation’s history,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center to consult tribal leaders about appropriate display or return of items taken from those killed in the massacre.”
Hooper noted that yesterday marked the 131st anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
