CAIR-WA Applauds UW Bothell Prof’s Decision to Offer Exams After Sundown for Fasting Muslim Students

(BOTHELL, WA, 6/12/2018) – The Washington state chapter Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) today applauded the decision by University of Washington Bothell Professor Laura Umetsu to offer final exams after sundown in order to accommodate students who may be fasting for Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth and most important month of the Muslim year, when Muslims do not eat between break-of-dawn and sunset. The fast ends this week.

“Above all, it just seemed like the decent thing to do,” Umetsu explained. “Considering that it’s only two more hours of my time but makes the world of difference to the students who might otherwise tank the final because of late afternoon fasting hunger and thirst.”

In addition to letting students test after they have had the opportunity to break their fast, she also provided nourishment; including a variety of baked goods, fruit and beverages.

CAIR-WA Civil Rights Director Jasmin Samy recognized the importance of such a move at a major university:

“We applaud UW Bothell professor Laura Umetsu’s decision to accommodate students who are fasting this Ramadan by allowing them to take tests after breaking their fasts,” said Samy. “This is a great example of how schools can create an inclusive learning environment for all students regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or national origin.”

She noted that offering flexible test times as a way to accommodate students is a trend that has been on the rise in recent years. Last year, another UW Bothell professor offered students an after-sundown option.

CAIR also offers a booklet, called “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
