(SEATTLE, WA, 3/6/2013) — The Washington State chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) today submitted a public records request to Concrete School District for information regarding curriculum, approved texts and materials, internal correspondence, and past complaints against the district.
In October 2012, a teacher at Concrete Middle School, Ms. Mary Janda, compared Muslims to Nazis during a class lesson. CAIR-WA’s letter to the district included a request for public records which were never provided.
“Often one complaint is indicative of a larger pattern of biased education,” said CAIR-WA Civil Rights Coordinator Jennifer Gist. “We are requesting public records from the District to review their materials and past complaints, in an effort to analyze the quality of equal education it affords its students.”
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
