CAIR Welcomes American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Resolution Opposing Anti-Muslim Bigotry

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/30/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a resolution adopted last week by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) “Opposition to Anti-Muslim Bigotry, Discrimination and Violence.”

In a letter sent by CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad to AFT President Randi Weingarten, CAIR stated in part:

“It is historically significant when the nation’s largest union that represents 1.7 million educators publicly resolves to do even more to unequivocally oppose ”˜bigotry, discrimination and violence against Muslims’”¦

CAIR’s “2018 Civil Rights Report: Targeted” found in 2017 there was a 17 percent increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents and a 15 percent increase in hate crimes against American Muslims, compared to the previous year.

In 2017, the California Chapter of CAIR’s school bullying report “Unshakable: The Bullying of Muslim Students and the Unwavering Movement to Eradicate It” found that 53 percent of surveyed American Muslim students in that state reported being bullied by other students for being Muslim.

Moreover, 38 percent of those respondents had been bullied by teachers because of their faith. Additionally, the report found that only 32 percent of students felt their problems were resolved by an adult when they reported Muslim-based harassment.
