(BALTIMORE, MD, 10/22/2020) — The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today welcomed the arrest of a Maryland man who has been charged with threatening former Vice President Biden and Senator Kamala Harris.

The secret service yesterday arrested and charged Fredrick county resident James Dale Reed for allegedly threatening to beat “Grandpa Biden,” to rape Sen. Kamala Harris, and to target Democrat supporters.
The letter read in part: “We have a list of homes and addresses by your election signs. We are the ones with those scary guns, We are the ones your children have nightmares about. The Boogeymen coming in the night.”
Voter suppression, especially that targeting members of a political party or a minority group, has been a long-standing concern leading up to the general election on November 3.
“CAIR supports everyone’s right to vote safely — free from harm and intimidation,” said CAIR’s Director in Maryland Zainab Chaudry. “We condemn these alleged threats in the strongest terms possible and urge residents to immediately report any threat, act of violence, or form of voter suppression to law enforcement, the Maryland State Board of Elections and to CAIR.”

According to the federal criminal complaint, “defendant, James Dale Reed, knowingly and willfully threatened to kill and to kidnap and to inflict bodily harm upon Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris, who are major candidates for the office of the President and Vice President of the United States.”
“Conduct like this threatens major candidates and fellow citizens and undermines our democracy and the principles upon which America was founded. We will not tolerate threatening conduct that seeks to intimidate, harass or dissuade Americans from exercising their right to vote,” said U.S. Attorney for Maryland, Robert Hur.
Yesterday, CAIR condemned a threatening letter received by residents in Frederick, Maryland who had displayed a Biden-Harris campaign sign on their front lawn.

CAIR is calling on all voters in Maryland to familiarize themselves with tactics that are used to influence the outcome of an election and discourage people and groups from voting, and to immediately report instances of voter suppression to CAIR and the Maryland State Board of Elections.
Voter suppression is a federal crime in the United States. All eligible citizens have the right to cast their vote, but many forms of voter suppression have been used throughout history to prevent groups of people from voting.
Earlier this week, CAIR issued its 2020 Maryland Voter Guide for the state’s Muslim community.
