(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/24/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by President Biden to establish a national monument honoring lynching victim Emmett Till and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley.
The brutal 1955 murder of Till, an African-American teenager from Chicago, and his mother’s public response helped propel the Civil Rights Movement.
President Biden reportedly plans to sign a proclamation on Tuesday to create the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument across three sites in Illinois and Mississippi. The individual spoke on condition of anonymity because the White House had not formally announced the president’s plans.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“We thank President Biden for establishing this memorial honoring Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley, and for recognizing the impact of racial injustice and violence on our nation’s history. We support efforts to preserve the legacy of the Tills, and we hope that this monument will be matched with concrete action to confront the continuing threat of anti-Black racism.”
Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
