(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/17/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a federal investigation into a Washington, D.C., police officer’s alleged ties to a white supremacist organization.
D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said a “high-ranking lieutenant” has been placed on leave as the department, as well as the FBI, Department of Justice, and U.S. Attorney’s Office, investigate his alleged ties to a white supremacist organization. While Contee did not reveal details about the officer or the group with whom they are suspected of being involved, he said the investigation “could involve” the events of Jan. 6.

“Any officer who is involved in a white supremacist organization cannot be trusted to fairly uphold the law and protect people of all backgrounds,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome this investigation, and urge law enforcement agencies nationwide to combat bigotry in their ranks.”
Hooper noted that yesterday, CAIR urged officials in Washington, D.C., to address the spike in anti-Asian incidents in that city.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.
