Muslim civil rights group says it is now time for removal of Stephen Miller and Sebastian Gorka
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/18/2017) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the firing of White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, the architect of President Trump’s “Muslim ban” executive orders.
CAIR had long called for Bannon’s removal. In February, CAIR called on Republican Party leaders to demand that President Trump dismiss Bannon following revelations that he promoted virulently anti-Muslim conspiracy theories in a 2007 film proposal.
Bannon is former head of the White supremacist mouthpiece “Breitbart News,” which traffics in misogynistic and racist stories targeting women, people of color and immigrants.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“We welcome Steve Bannon’s removal from a position of power in the White House that he did not deserve and should never have been given. His malevolent influence on policy-making has done possibly irreparable harm to our nation’s interests and image. We thank all those courageous public officials, community leaders and private citizens who brought pressure to bear, resulting in Bannon’s ouster.
“His position should now be filled by someone who actually believes in the equality of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity or religion.
“It is now time for the similar removal of all other extremist, Islamophobic and white supremacist administration staffers, including Stephen Miller and Sebastian Gorka.
“We must all keep up the pressure until the White House reflects the makeup and values of our nation.”
Bannon’s firing comes one day after CAIR condemned tweets by President Trump in support of “beautiful” Confederate statues and monuments, and another Islamophobic tweet promoting false information in response to the Barcelona terror attack.
The Washington-based civil rights organization said it has witnessed an unprecedented increase in hate incidents targeting members of minority groups since the election of Donald Trump and is urging community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report
CAIR recently launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
