The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a guilty pea by a Norfolk, Virginia, man who reportedly said he wanted to kill “Blacks and Jews” and told “officers to let him go so he can hunt and kill those minority groups.”
Daniel Joseph Ferguson Jr., 28, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor brandishing, misdemeanor hate crime assault, felony attempted malicious wounding, and felony shooting into an occupied vehicle. He was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison.
“We welcome the guilty plea and sentencing in this troubling case and hope the lengthy prison sentence will send a strong message to all those who may consider turning their hate-filled views into violent actions,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that yesterday, CAIR condemned hate propaganda by a white supremacist group in Wyoming.
Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
