(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/26/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed hate crime charges brought against a man allegedly responsible for a series of bias-motivated incidents targeting Black drivers, a Mexican family and others.
A Concord, N.C., man has been charged with hate crimes related to several incidents dating back to November 2021. In one incident, the man reportedly pulled up next to a Black man’s vehicle and began shouting racial slurs, then reportedly cut him off, exited his vehicle and continued making racial slurs at the victim. The victim said knives were visible in the perpetrator’s car.
Another incident involved the man reportedly harassing a Mexican family with derogatory remarks and pelting a neighbor’s car with eggs. The man made his first court appearance last week.

“We welcome the hate charges in this case and ask that – if convicted – the alleged perpetrator be sentenced appropriately based on the facts and the law,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No one should be subjected to such alleged hateful, racist harassment.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
