CAIR Welcomes Hate Crime Charges for Racist Threats Targeting Maryland Black Students

(BALTIMORE, MD, 3/14/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed hate crime charges for three Maryland eighth-grade students accused of threatening to kill Black classmates.

The three students are accused of posting threatening, racist images on Snapchat and Instagram. The students reportedly threatened to kill Black classmates, and the pictures displayed firearms. Frederick County police found that some of the firearms in the pictures were fake, one was real. The three students have been charged with hate crimes, and one student was charged with possession of a firearm by a minor.

“This disturbing and deeply unfortunate incident is a reminder that the dangers of racism and bigotry also impact children and can have serious consequences. We welcome law enforcement’s swift response to the threats and encourage local leaders to lead the way and help set the tone for the community to come together to heal and commit to opposing the spread of hate.”

Chaudry noted that CAIR condemned the threats last week.
