(WASHINGTON D.C., 5/4/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passage of a bill by that state’s House of Representatives that would drop Louisiana’s two Confederate holidays.
House Bill 248, which would remove Robert E. Lee Day and Confederate Memorial Day from Louisiana’s list of legal holidays, passed on Monday with a 62-20 vote. The bill now goes to the state Senate.

“White supremacist traitors do not deserve to be honored by officially-recognized holidays,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We welcome the passage of this legislation by Louisiana’s House of Representatives and urge state senators to support it.”
He noted that CAIR expressed support for the legislation in March.
