CAIR Welcomes Louisiana Senate Passage of Bill Dropping Confederate Holidays

(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/6/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passage by the Louisiana State Senate of a bill that would end the official celebration of the state’s two Confederate holidays.

House Bill 248, which would drop Confederate Memorial Day and Robert E. Lee Day as official Louisiana state holidays, was approved 29-4 by the State Senate. Before going to Governor John Bel Edwards for final approval, the bill will go back to the House for review of a wording change. The bill was introduced in March, and passed the House last month.

“The Confederacy’s legacy of white supremacy, slavery and treason does not deserve to be honored with public holidays in any American state,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We welcome the passage of this bill by the Louisiana Senate, and we urge Governor Edwards to sign it into law.”

McCaw noted that CAIR expressed support for the bill when it was introduced in March.
