(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/7/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by a North Carolina women’s college to rename a building named for a white supremacist historical figure.
North Carolina’s Meredith College announced yesterday that it will be a renaming a building named for James Yadkin Joyner, a white supremacist who supported unequal funding for schools based on race. Buildings on the campuses of UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina University are also named for Joyner.

“An individual opposed to providing equal education to students based on their race does not deserve to be honored on a college campus,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We welcome the decision of Meredith College to rename this building and urge UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina to take similar action.”
He said that just yesterday, CAIR welcomed a ruling by the North Carolina Court of Appeals allowing the City of Asheville to remove a Confederate monument.
Allison noted that in March, CAIR condemned repeated white supremacist vandalism of a Black Lives Matter mural on the campus of North Carolina’s Shaw University.

He also noted that in July, CAIR urged the University of South Carolina (USC) to remove the names of racist and Confederate historical figures from buildings on campus.
