(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/31/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the creation of a Detroit-based U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) community relations position within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designed to build trust and work with Michigan’s Arab-American and Muslim communities.
In a statement announcing the new position, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) said in part:
“Community leaders have long raised serious concerns about experiences with the travel screening process, and this new role will be a vital link between these communities and CBP officials to help address these concerns and other important civil rights issues.”
“We welcome this new DHS liaison to the Arab-American and Muslim communities and hope it results in increased cooperation and coordination on issues related to civil and religious rights at our nation’s borders and airports,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
“This new position could help prevent some of the past violations of immigrant and travelers’ rights and hopefully rebuild trust between impacted communities and CBP authorities,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
