(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/18/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed North Carolina’s House Bill 596 that would change hate crimes from a misdemeanor to a felony in that state.
That bill would also expand what is covered under the definition of a hate crime and create a state database of all hate crimes.

“We welcome the advancement of this important bill and hope it is taken up by the Senate and ultimately goes to the governor to be signed into law,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.
He noted that last month, CAIR welcomed approval of a hate crime bill by the South Carolina House.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
