Muslim civil rights group says long-term solution to student debt crisis must include interest-free loans
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/06/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the Secretary of Education’s addition to the Higher Education Act, the SAVE Plan.
CAIR previously took part in an online White House briefing on the plan.
The SAVE Plan replaces the REPAYE Plan and offers benefits to borrowers currently on REPAYE. It is an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan that determines monthly payment based on income and family size. The SAVE Plan provides the lowest monthly payments among all IDR plans for most student borrowers. Some borrowers can even see 0$ monthly payments.

In addition to the SAVE Repayment Plan if borrowers are unable to make payments, they will default but not go into delinquency, which reduces the consequences of nonpayment.
On June 30, 2023, CAIR expressed disagreement with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness plan and renewed its call for the government to address the student debt crisis by establishing interest-free student loans.
In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“CAIR applauds the White House’s commitment to providing assistance for student debt relief through President Biden’s Higher Education Act and SAVE Plan, despite the setback caused by the Supreme Court’s blocking of the REPAYE Plan.”
“Moving forward, it is crucial for President Biden and Congress to collaborate on passing legislation that grants forgiveness to current borrowers and addresses the long-term challenge of student debt by establishing interest-free loans for future borrowers.”
“By eliminating the burden of interest-based student loans, we can break free from the cycle of debt that unjustly affects millions of Americans, empowering them to thrive and make meaningful contributions to our society.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
