CAIR Welcomes Remarks by UN Ambassador at General Assembly Event Marking International Day to Combat Islamophobia

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/10/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed remarks by U.S. Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield at an event marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on March 15.

In her remarks, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield condemned human rights violations targeting Muslims in Burma (Myanmar) and China. She also said in part:

“For our part, the U.S. is committed to rooting out all forms of hate and intolerance at home and around the world. Last September, President Biden hosted the United We Stand Summit to honor Americans working to address discrimination and bigotry. And we have established an interagency group to counter anti-Muslim hatred and religious discrimination wherever and whenever we see it.

“Colleagues, as Muslims prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, a time of fasting and caring for communities, let us redouble our efforts to combat prejudice and violence. And let us do everything in our power to ensure the next time we gather for the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, our world is that much more peaceful, tolerant, and just.”

“We welcome Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield’s remarks and hope her noble sentiments result in concrete action worldwide to combat Islamophobic hate and the oppression of Muslim minority communities,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor.

Saylor noted that next week, CAIR plans to unite for the first time ever with a coalition of Muslim civic organizations in nations around the world to mark the UN’s First International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
