(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/1/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the resignation of a political appointee at the U.S. Department of Interior who made anti-Muslim and other offensive comments on Facebook and Twitter.
Christine Bauserman, who previously worked for President Trump’s presidential campaign, served as a special assistant to Secretary Ryan Zinke. According to CNN, “Bauserman repeatedly shared conspiracy theories, made anti-Muslim comments and shared anti-LGBT sentiments on social media.” She also shared conspiracy theories about former President Obama’s citizenship and called him a “black man from the black panther movement.”
On Saturday, she retweeted an image that featured Obama and the text, “IN 8 YRS I IMPROVED LIFE FOR MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL ALIENS, EVERY MUSLIM TERRORIST GROUP & BASICALLY EVERYONE I COULD EXCEPT THE ONE COUNTRY I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR.”
Bauserman shared an Islamophobic post that listed a series of terrorist attacks with the caption “If you don’t call this a pattern, you are out of your mind.” In another post made after the 2016 shooting in Orlando, Fla., Bauserman claimed the attack showed the “reality of the Hate that is Islam.”

“Unfortunately, these anti-Muslim and conspiratorial views mirror or are in tune with comments made by President Trump,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We welcome that fact that Ms. Bauserman is being held accountable for her extremist views, but such bigotry should not be acceptable for any public official, including someone in the nation’s highest office.”
The Washington-based civil rights and advocacy organization urges community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report
CAIR launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
